I am looking for an ice cream maker to make both regular ice cream and soft serve? Does such a thing exist or would I need two machines?

So I picked up this nifty appliance the other day on clearance. I thought that it would provide some wholesome family entertainment. We froze the drum for 24 hours, used a recipe from the manual and pretty much totally followed the directions and the thing did not freeze the ice cream. Big frowns in our house. The only thing that my husband did not do was pour the liquid through the top. He actually filled the drum before putting it in. Has anyone had any luck with this appliance? What are we doing wrong?

I am thinking of buying an ice cream maker and am thinking between mistral’s whirly cream soft serve maker and the normal ice cream maker the igloo model. Which one is better?

I like soft serve ice creams so was thinking more of buying the whirly cream but I heard it’s quite inconvenient to clean up.

I checked about the igloo online and it says it can be used to make not just ice creams but also frozen yoghurt and sorbets so it seems more of a useful machine since it can make more variety of cold stuff.

Has anyone used any of these before? Possible to give some good tips?
Or are there any other brands and models you would recommend? I am on a tight budget so looking for a low end product but which is still able to make acceptable ice cream.
